Howdy there, Skags and Sirens! It’s time for another edition of Gearbox Community Badass. This week, we’re chatting with veteran forum sage and master guide writer @Gulfwulf! Gulf has proven over the years to bejust one of our community’s most trusted sources for information on character builds and gear. All this ensures that Gulf keeps pretty busy, but luckily, he’s not too busy to be our Community Badass!
How long have you been playing Borderlands?
Since Borderlands 1 came out in 2009. A friend introduced my wife and I to it and we haven’t looked back since.
What is it about Borderlands that has you hooked and coming back for more?
The action, the guns, the characters, being able to play it with my wife and friends of ours. Borderlands is a great stress reliever after a long day and it’s really fun.
Who is your favorite playable character?
That’s a difficult question, but I have to say Krieg followed closely by Fragtrap and Brick. I also like changing things up and playing Maya sometimes.
If you had your own action skill, what would it be? (and why)
Probably Krieg’s buzz ax rampage because my wife and I live on three acres of land outside city limits and being able to slice and dice my way through trees and branches would really come in handy.
What are you most looking forward to seeing from Gearbox in the near future?
Aside from Borderlands 3 (hint, hint), I’m really looking forward to seeing how Battleborn shapes up once it’s released. What I’ve seen so far has me really excited and I can’t wait for the beta to be ready (hint, hint). I’m hoping GBX has as much success with it as it did with the Borderlands franchise. I have to admit I’m a little torn between Montana and Boldur right now, but from what I’ve read, I won’t have to restart the game to switch between them and that’s something I’m really looking forward to.
What’s your favorite thing about the Gearbox community?
The amazing people who are more than willing to share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise. When I first came here, I didn’t know much about how to play the different characters in Borderlands 2, but I found a lot of guides on class skills, weapons, gear, and general tips that really helped me step up my game and make it to the OP levels. When I wrote my guides for Krieg and Fragtrap, I got a lot of positive feedback that really helped me refine them and make them more useful to someone coming in off the street who might not have a whole lot of information about those two “unorthodox” characters, especially when it comes to what skills to take for certain play styles. I’m really grateful to those who created and maintain the various guides for the other characters because I like having something to reference whenever I play them. I’m especially grateful to Blut for starting the Dear Doctor Dumbass guides and Hoyle4 for taking over the top gear for Clappy when I could no longer maintain it.
Got anything you’d like to plug?
I’m one of those old foggies who doesn’t deal much with social media, so I’m going to go with this great site, its moderators, and GBX staff who keep things humming along peacefully. I feel we have a great community here, and being a system admin for an adult gaming website, I know how hard it is to keep differing viewpoints from clashing and potentially turning into something nasty. Dealing with adult content and its sometimes negative elements is bad enough, I can’t imagine trying to deal with angry or disappointed customers who vent their frustrations here. But I applaud all of you who help keep the peace and my hat goes off to each of you.
